Land Stewardship
Wine Victoria acknowledges the Traditional Owners of the lands on which Victoria’s vineyards and wineries operate and pay respect to Elders past and present. We recognise their deep and ongoing connection to land, water and culture, and the knowledge systems that have cared for Country for tens of thousands of years.
Overview
Land stewardship is about caring for the land in a way that supports long-term productivity, environmental health and connection to place. For Victorian wine businesses, this means working with natural systems, understanding local conditions and making decisions that balance production with the health of soils, water, biodiversity and community.
Biodiversity 2037
Biodiversity is a key focus in Victoria, guided by the ‘Protecting Victoria’s Environment – Biodiversity 2037’ plan to halt the decline of native species and improve the natural environment. Grapegrowers and winemakers play an important role in supporting these outcomes through vineyard practices.
A Carbon Neutral Journey
Read about Wine Victoria member Tahbilk Estates carbon neutral journey in this case study which shows how a Victorian family-owned winery has taken a long-term, data-driven approach to reducing emissions.
Regional Program
The Regional program is a key initiative of Wine Australia that seeks to actively encourage and support research and innovation in the Australian wine sector. Victoria runs an active regional program to upskill growers and makers.
Land stewardship in practice
Land stewardship is not a single action, but a series of decisions made over time. From planting native vegetation and improving soil health, to managing climate risk and understanding carbon, these practices support more resilient vineyards and healthier landscapes. Land stewardship is a core part of Sustainable Winegrowing Australia, supporting businesses to manage natural resources responsibly, improve biodiversity and build long-term resilience across vineyard and winery operations.
