Planned Burns - Update on Wine Victoria Activities

Rutherglen Rutherglen

Wine Victoria is continuing to advocate on our planned burns policy platform. The importance of this work has been underscored by the start to the Spring planned burns season and predictions for a hot summer ahead.

Wine Victoria has worked with the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP) to develop an agreed schedule of communications regarding planned burns. This schedule works to ensure that regional wine associations and DELWP representatives are as informed as possible at all stages of the planned burns cycle, and creates further opportunities for input into the rollout of planned burns.

One of the most important tools to assist our members in managing the impacts of planned burns are the communications agreements between regional wine associations and DELWP. Wine Victoria is currently working to understand the status of these agreements in each of our wine regions, and how we can support their delivery.

We are also developing other tools to minimise the impacts of planned burns, such as a seasonal harvest calendar for the state which will be provided to DELWP for use in scheduling planned burns.

There is also an opportunity for Wine Victoria members to attend an industry forum hosted by DELWP on 15 December 2015, which will consider the impacts of planned burns.
