The Bill proposes to merge the existing Wine Australia Corporation (WAC) and the Grape and Wine Research and Development Corporation (GWRDC). The merger would bring together the research and development functions of the GWRDC and the marketing and export oversight functions of the WAC.
Proposed by both Wine Grape Growers Australia (WGGA), and the Winemakers' Federation of Australia (WFA) after consultation with members and stakeholders, the intent is to create a single organisation that is well positioned to effectively meet the needs of the industry.
If passed, the Australian Grape and Wine Authority will start operations from 1 July 2014. It will undertake the same functions as the previous two organisations and will operate under the existing levy and fees structure.
