Cellar Door Rebate Guideline updates
The Victorian Treasurer has recently approved new Guidelines for the payment of liquor subsidies to eligible Victorian liquor licensees. The Victorian liquor subsidy scheme enables Victorian wine producers to claim a subsidy on certain retail sales and applications to the use of their own product. It also provides a subsidy for the wholesale sale of low-alcohol wine. The scheme is administered by the State Revenue Office (SRO) The new Guidelines do not make any major changes to the subsidy scheme. On August 28 a wine industry leaders' meeting 'Grape and Wine 2015 – A Focus for Action' will be held in Adelaide with topics focusing on profitability and optimising regional representation. State Government grants funding available for wine industry
A range of State Government grants are now open for suitable wine industry applicants. This funding is spread across innovation, marketing, tourism, investment and planning programs. Many have uncapped funding available and offer unique business support and guidance to grow your business. Deadlines for these applications range from September 2015 to June 2016. Wine Victoria cautiously optimistic about increase in export volume, value
Wine Victoria has welcomed new national data showing a rise in the volume and value of Australian wine exports, however remains focused on the need to improve recognition of Victoria's premium wine to help overcome the industry's oversupply issues and enable producers return to a state of profitability. Wine Australia's Wine Export Approval Report 2015 (WEAR) last week showed that the value of Australian wine exports has increased for the first time since 2006-07, rising by 5% to A$1.89 billion. International visitors to Victoria increasing
Wine Victoria welcomes the latest International Visitor Survey results, released by Tourism Research Australia, which shows Victoria received 2.1 million international visitors in 2014 – an 8.9 per cent increase on the year prior. Victoria ranked well above the national average, and also fared better than key competitors New South Wales and Queensland. Long-term trends show Victoria is outperforming the two states in growth rates for international visitors, overnight expenditure and visitor nights for the 2008 – 2014 period. New survey to combine pricing, crush data
Key Australian wine bodies have joined forces to introduce the combined Wine Sector Survey 2015, which will streamline the annual collection of wine data. The survey will combine data collected annually by the Australia Grape and Wine Authority (AGWA) Price Dispersion Survey, the Winemakers' Federation of Australia (WFA) Vintage Survey, the South Australian Crush Survey and the Murray-Darling / Swan Hill Wine Grape Crush Report. Victorian Government to consult stakeholders on recommended risk-based bushfire fuel management
Wine Victoria has welcomed the news that the Victorian Government will consult stakeholders and communities on bushfire fuel management recommendations made by the Inspector-General for Emergency Management (IGEM). The report, titled Review of Performance Targets for Bushfire Fuel Management on Public Land, was released on May 21 and includes a recommended shift away from a hectare-based fuel reduction target to a risk-reduction target. Wine Victoria to work with state government on $1m tourism plan
Wine Victoria, the peak body representing the interests of the Victorian wine industry, will work closely with the state Government to roll out a $1 million investment aimed at boosting Victorian wine tourism and exports. The $1 million plan was announced today by Minister for Agriculture and Regional Development, the Honourable Jaala Pulford, as part of the government's 2015-16 budget. Mergers result in fewer Australian wine companies
Recent figures from industry publisher Winetitles shed light on the number of new wine companies, amalgamations and businesses ceasing to operate in Australia. The Australian wine industry has gained 103 new wine companies, yet for the first time in three decades has shown a net loss in the overall number of companies, according to the latest Australian and New Zealand Wine Industry Directory (WID). The directory lists 2,481 Australian companies who commercially sell their wine. The rampant growth in the number of wine companies reached a peak in 2014. Want to have your voice heard? Wine Victoria is calling for volunteers to form a representative sample of the wine industry to regularly contribute to the formation of industry policy. Volunteers will be required to complete surveys and participate in workshops, likely to be no more than twice a year. New Regional Council: Beechworth Vignerons Association
Welcome to the Beechworth Vignerons Association (BVA), which joins Wine Victoria from North-East Victoria as our latest Regional Council, represented by Barry Morey of Sorrenberg Vineyard. The AWRI's Research, Development and Extension plan for 2013-2018 is the blueprint for the AWRI's activities up to 2018. It details 50 projects, grouped under 17 theme headings. While the waters continue to swirl around wine tax reform and the application of the WET rebate, the Australian Tax Office (ATO) is stepping up its campaign to rid the industry of tax rorting. In a widely reported announcement, the ATO called in the Australian Federal Police to investigate particular claims with a view to imposing criminal sanctions.

Survey - Tell Us What You Think
The Victorian wine industry has been facing some challenging times in recent years. This issue was highlighted in the 2013 inaugural Wine Victoria (WV) survey which found almost 65 per cent of respondents did not make a profit in the 2011-12 financial year. Further analysis undertaken by the WV Board found this could be closer to 90 per cent.

Assessing Smoke Taint Risk
Over the past week, the AWRI has responded to many enquiries about the presence of smoke across wine regions. Some producers are understandably concerned about whether the presence of smoke will lead to smoke taint in their grapes and resultant wines.

Wine Victoria Board Member, Damien Sheehan
Damien is a qualified viticulturist who has worked in the wine industry since 1991. He is currently the General Manager and Viticulturist at Mount Langi Ghiran. Previous industry roles have included Chair of the Viticulture Sub-Committee of the Victorian Wine Industry Association and member of the Steering Committee of the Viticulture Market Order (IDC). Damien is currently Chair of the Victorian Viticulture Biosecurity Committee, member of the Joint Governance Committee for the Victorian Node of the Australian Wine Research Institute and co-chair of the Industry/DSE Forum (Fire Management).

Nominations open for AWRI Board positions
Nominations are sought for three Levy Payer-elected Director positions on the AWRI Board, which will become vacant on 31 December 2013. The AWRI's Constitution provides that there will be not less than seven nor more than 11 directors. Six of those directors are nominated and/or elected by organisations that pay the Wine Grapes Levy. Nominations close on Friday, 27 September 2013 at 5:00 pm.
